Referral to Medical Specialists

A GP referral to a medical specialist allows you to claim a Medicare rebate for your specialist consultation. Please note that there is often an out-of-pocket cost, although we cannot provide exact figures. Patients can request a repeat referral from their GP to their medical specialist by calling the practice on 9411 3411 or via HotDoc.

Conditions for repeat referral requests:

Backdating referrals is unlawful and would breach the Commonwealth Health Insurance Act.

Repeat referrals can only be provided to medical specialists you have previously seen.

Your GP may be unable to provide a repeat referral if they have not recently consulted with you.

Each referral request is assessed by your doctor, who will approve or decline the request based on clinical grounds. If declined, you will be advised to make an appointment in person.

Referral requests may take up to three business days to process, subject to your regular doctor's availability and approval on clinical grounds.

A fee of $35 is charged for each request, payable via HotDoc.
Referral for Ultrasound or Pathology Clinics

To undergo certain diagnostic tests or investigations, patients typically require a referral from a GP. This referral is necessary to claim a Medicare rebate. While we cannot provide precise cost details, please be aware that there is often an out-of-pocket expense.
